Simon Peter said to Jesus, Lord, where are you going?
Jesus answered, You are not able to follow Me now where I am going, but you will follow Me afterwards.
Then Peter asked, Lord, why cannot I follow You now? I will lay down my life for You.
Jesus answered, Will you really lay down your life for Me? I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me and completely disown Me, three times.
But those who had seized Jesus took Him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders had assembled. But Peter followed Him at a distance, as far as the courtyard of the high priestīs home, he even went inside and sat with the guards. And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were seated together, Peter sat among them. At that time, a maid came up to Peter and said, You were also with the Galilean! But Peter denied it falsely before them all, saying, I do not know what you mean!
And when Peter had gone out to the porch, another maid saw him, and she said to the bystanders, This fellow was with Jesus the Nazerene! And again Peter denied it and disowned Him with an oath, saying, I do not know this Man!
And about the space of an hour, the bystanders came up and said to Peter, You certainly are one of them too, for even your accent betrays you. Then Peter began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, I do not even know the Man! And at that moment a rooster crowed. And at that moment, the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered Jesusī words, when He had said, Before a single rooster crows, you will deny and disown Me three times. And Peter went outside and wept bitterly.
